&lt;p&gt;As far as I know, these things are more or less ornamental.  They can be used as utensils / dishware, but I'd probably limit it to dry nuts or things of that sort.  That's just my own take on it.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;In terms of authenticity, I think the main thing is that it's a matter of process in making them.  Authenticity is not marked by where they come from (i.e. some specific town), but rather how they're made.  I know they usually start with the gold pain layer first.  So maybe you can scratch the bottom to see if the gold layer is the first layer.&lt;/p&gt;
